STONE DYNAMICS GALLERY EXHIBITION OF ZIMBABWE STONE SCULTPURE AT THE GALLERIE ZÜRICHSEE, BÄCH, SWITZERLAND, 2013
this system did not work in Africa because the artists felt their freedom was being stifled and therefore their art suffered.
Stone Dynamics Gallery, established in 1986 by Stuart Danks and his friend Jonathan Croeser (who left the gallery some years later), wanted to provide an outlet for younger artists. They had the work of the old masters or ‘First Generation’ such as Nicholas Mukomberanwa, John, Bernard and Lazarus Takawira, Joram Mariga, Henry Munyaradzi and Richard Mteki, but the gallery was the birthplace of most of the new artists who became known as the ‘Second Generation’. Sculptors such as the late Brighton Sango and Gladman Zinyeka started here as well as many others including Zachariah Njobo, Cosmos Kamhiriri, Eddie Masaya, and others whose work still sells there today. Stone Dynamics Gallery understood that the artists needed freedom to express them- selves. Shortly after opening in Harare, they opened an additional gallery in the country’s premier tourist destination of Victoria Falls in the historic Victoria Falls Hotel. The hotel maintains a permanent exhibition to this day, allowing visitors from all over the world to view and purchase Zimbabwean art.
