THE ASHLEY BOOK OF KNOTS
2774. A BIGHT EYE SPLICE. This is used in boat lashings, in secur·
ing whaleboat stays, etc. EYE'#: 2725 is put in a short rope's end, the
other end of which is then side spliced to the stay or lashing. The
lower end of the stay is rove through a ring or eye at the gunnel,
and is then led up through the BlGHT EYE SPLICE. One or two round
turns are taken through the opposing eyes and are hauled taut.
Frapping turns are added and. the end is made fast around the turns.
2775. An EYE SPLICE in the bight. This knot or splice is to be
found described in the chapter on tricks and puzzles ('#: 2 58 5). It is
2774 211S slovenly in appearance and will injure the rope if used practically.
2776. A ROUND EYE. This is the result of an attempt to make a
ROUND EYE for the honda of a lariat. The inside of the eye presents
an even lay.
2777. A GROMMET EYE. This was made for a fair-leader. The
grommet itself is described in the following chapter on odd splices
as '#: 2864. It does not have to be of the same weight as the rope to
which it is spliced. Each end after tucking under one strand as
pictured is led around the back of the grommet and is there tucked
into its own standing part as indicated by the arrows in the first
diagram. After this the ends are tucked regularly over and under,
once full, once one half and once one quarter. The RIGHT-ANGLE
SPLICE which attaches the rope to the grommet is also given as
'#: 2851 in the next chapter.
2., I {, 2778. This is a similar eye based on William A. Larson's BACK-
HANDED RING SPLICE ('#:2859).
2779. A honda on a braided rope lariat is commonly made by
raveling and tapering the tip and then forming the eye and riveting
the end above the tip to the standing part with copper tacks. The
whole eye and neck is then served over with copper wire, or only
the bosom with copper and the rest with strong fishline.
2780. A HONDA KNOT with a side spliced end. Make a round turn
I in the end of a rope and side splice the end to the inside of the turn.
1 Tuck the strands onc(4, cut the ends off at a length equal to twice the
diameter of the rope and scrape to a taper. Serve the length of the
splice snugly with small fishline and add a HALF HITCH with the
standing part.
2177 2781. A MAINSHEET EYE for a small boat is shown by Qualtrough.
When on the wind, the eve is fast to a hook, aft. When before the
wind, the hook is cast off and the knot above the eye fetches against
