Thailand? Isn't that Scary?
First, I feel 30 times safer walking the streets of Chiangmai at night than I would feel in a city in the U.S. You can get in trouble here. If you say something disparaging about the Royal Family, you will end up behind bars. If you cause a Thai person to lose face, like in a road rage incident, he can legally shoot you. There are guns here, but I've never seen one. Oh wait, our brother-in-law is a policeman. He has one.
If you say the wrong thing to a drunk Thai or a drunk foreigner, you can get into a fight.
I once met a guy who ran a girly bar in Chiangmai and he told me this story. He'd just bought the bar, and one night a drunken foreigner came in and was causing trouble. The bar owner figured it was his job to get the drunk out of there so he started for him. But the girls stopped him. "No, boss, we'll handle this".
Then, to his bewilderment, they started taking off their shoes. What the hell? Then he tumbled to the method. Ever looked at bargirl shoes? Those glittery ones with the really high heels, some of them spiked, some of them clunky? Well, they make really scary weapons. The drunk saw them coming at him, shoes raised, and sobered up quickly. He turned around and was gone.
All that being said, my Canadian friend Jeff just got back from a golf outing in Chiang Rai and apparently they'd been sitting at a street bar after their golf game, about 5 p.m, having a beer. Suddenly there was a loud argument in the street between this tough, tattooed Danish guy and his Thai girlfriend and she was giving as good as she got. Then the guy, who was obviously on some mind- altering substance, came over to their table and said, "You guys laughing at this?"
Jeff and the others said no, they weren't laughing.
The guy then punched one of the golfers. A couple of times. And then was gone. The police got there after the action and arrested the girlfriend. The next day the golfers were called to the police station to give their statements and the Danish guy came in to get his girlfriend. He was wearing his biker colors and they
