• Limited or no possibility to interact with natives. Such possibility is offered at extra costs by some of these
applications. However, even so, presence of natives there is sporadic and usually in the context of
languages of high interest;
• No certification or recognition of learning. It means again no finality or further use of any competence
achieved;
By looking only to the issues listed above it is easy to realize that, at this stage, there is no real online standalone
solution for learning foreign languages. Most of users are ending up having many applications installed and being
members of various groups, under various platforms hoping that learning will improve. Motivation is high in the
start of the process, but it burns out when things are getting complicated in terms of grammar and the need of
qualified support becomes evident. The tremulous number of language groups and the multitude of
applications on market confirms a growing need to learn foreign languages.
Market analysis
Following a market analysis performed in July 2019 by an external consultant, the value of transactions when
it comes to language learning applications goes beyond 1000.000.000 USD per year and it continues to rise.
Competition is very intense in the field of learning foreign languages with some actors having mature and well
know on-line solutions (e.g. Dulonigo, Fluentu, Rosetta Stone). The only one using bots is Rosetta Stone. In the
chart below you can see the annual revenue of main applications for language learning available on apple
store and google playstore. The chart confirms the high interest and the willingness of the user to invest in
learning foreign language.
