Why Microbiology?
• As a basic biological science, microbiology provides accessible research tools for
probing the nature of life processes
– Microorganisms are excellent models for understanding cellular function in higher
organisms
• Microbial cells share many biochemical properties with cells of multicellular
organisms
• Microbial cells easily grown in large amounts in the laboratory and are easily
amenable to biochemical and genetic studies
