Chapter 3: Theory of Operation
Area Alarm Wiring Conventions
This section provides an overview of typical wiring conventions between
MedPlus TotalAlert™ Alarm Network Area Alarms and gas-specific
transducers.
• Signal wires must be a minimum of 22-gauge, stranded, shielded, twisted-
pair.
NOTE:
If the wire runs in or passes through an area within the ceiling or air duct
designated as Return or Supply Air, plenum wire may be required. Wire in
these spaces must comply with different requirements for temperature ratings,
smoke ratings, etc.

• Signal wires must be no longer than 4500' (1372 m).
• The shielded part of the wiring from the gas-specific transducer must be
connected to the “G” position on the Area Alarm Breakout P.C. Board’s
terminal block. The other two wires may be connected in either the “A”
and “B” positions (see figure 3-4 on page 3-13).
• When installing a MedPlus TotalAlert™ Alarm Network Area Alarm, the
provided gas-specific transducers must be used for proper alarm operation.
