Glossary
Chapter 6: General Procedures
Ethernet Switch—A device that connects many Ethernet devices together
with optimization. Message destinations are examined and passed only to the
correct device. 10BaseT can connect at optimum speed. Switches improve
network performance.
Fire-wall—A computer or computer software that prevents unauthorized
access to private data from outside computer users.
HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP)—Manages Web pages that are being
requested, and transports them to the appropriate computer.
Internet Protocol (IP) Address—A unique number that identifies a device on
a network.
Link—Shown as an underlined word on a Web page. Click on it to go to its
Web page.
Local Area Network (LAN)—A facility’s network.
NetBios Name Service—A local method of addressing a device by name in
addition to IP address. This allows an Internet browser to reference a device by
a name, such as “Master123456”, instead of an IP address, such as
192.168.2.3; which a user often does not know. Devices on the other side of a
router will not be located. A DNS provides this function on a WAN, such as
the Internet.
Nullmodem.inf—Device file that is similar to a device file that manufacturers
provide for real modems (see “NULL Modem Driver Setup Instructions for
Windows® Operating System” on page 6-20). It is also available under the
name “nullmodem.inf,” at various Internet sites.
Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP)—PPP transmits TCP/IP data over a serial
cable or modem.
Pull-down Menu—List hidden in a window until you click on the arrow
beside the first item in the list.
RS-232—Serial communication port and cable.
Server—A computer on a network that provides information or services on
demand.
TCP/IP—A protocol used by the Internet to route and transmit information,
such as files and web pages, between computers.
