YOUTHMIX
SCHOOL
&
MY
CULTURE
by Christian Sedillo Esquivel
There are kids of different nationalities at Piggott that I hang out with dur- ing recess. even in our classroom. My friend Niko is part Jamaican and...... Michael is part Peruvian....
I love recess. This is the chance we get to hang out and meet different kids. We get to know each other while we play different games. Luckily, there is not one bully in our group except that sometimes some of the girls get re- ally bossy.
I’ve also had the pleasure of attending birthday parties of my classmates. In some parties, I noticed that the food each family bring & serve are differ- ent. I am very hesitant in trying the different foods. But, ones I tasted, some are really delicious and some are just ok. All of the families are really nice to us. They make sure that we feel at home and that we get to know & talk to them.
Some of the teachers at school have Filipino blood but none of them speak Filipino. Ms. Maile Rodrigues was my 3rd grade teacher. She came from Hawaii and her parents are Filipino/Hawaiian. Ms. Miranda is also a 3rd grade teacher she has Filipino blood. Recently, our principal Mr. Hudzick told us he went to Cebu, Philippines to help recruit teachers. He said he’d help me out with researching different cultures at Piggott and introduce me to the new Filipina teacher who is now working in my school!
In the next issue, we will be joined by some of our teachers and our prin- cipal. We will nd out the different programs the school has to promote different cultures and how they help to bring harmony to the students & parents.
