Portugal Wine Trophy 2017
In every edition of Divin, we present you with award-win- ning and outstanding wines. One thing they all have in common: they have all won prizes in com- petitions that accord with OIV guidelines. Doubtless thousands of tastings take place every year, but only 18 under the auspices of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) and / or the International Union of Oe- nologists (UIOE). They are there- fore the most strictly controlled competitions in the world. This ensures that all competitions are conducted using the same objective principles and high standards of quality.
Our partner, Deutsche Wein Marketing , is a world leader in these controlled, official tas- tings and the largest organiser of competitions that are carried out under of cial supervision. With four international tasting competitions every year, DWM is indispensable as a guarantee of quality in the international wine industry and provides wine connoisseurs with important gui- dance, from the wine trade right up to the wine bar. Berlin (Ger- many), Beirrada (Portugal) and Daejeon (South Korea) are the places where the Trophy compe- titions are conducted. A total of nearly 20,000 wines from around 40 wine-producing nations are tasted and evaluated over the four dates by more than 600 judges altogether.
The wines presented here are a perfect guide for consumers who value quality.
For you as a wine drinker, a medal from one of these com- petitions held under the aegis of the OIV and/or the UIOE is a sign that quali ed judges have con rmed the quality of wine or sparkling wine in question in an objective, blind test. And this is regardless of the name of the
producer, the price or other in- uential factors.
Yet producers can also be sure that when they submit their products at an OIV tasting, the strictest of criteria are met.
For easier understanding and to give an overview, we make use of pictographs. A detailed legend can be found on the fol- lowing pages.
In this issue, we introduce you to the Portugal Wine Trophy. It is organised by Deutsche Wein Marketing.
Since 2014, the Portugal Wine Trophy has been held in Porto, one of the most important wine cities in the world. In May, wine lovers from all over the world come together in the beautiful city of Anadia (Bairrada).
At the previous Portugal Wine Trophy, only a few wines could win the coveted “Large Gold Me- dal”. Many different samples from around the world were entered into this year’s Portugal Wine Trophy. According to OIV, only 30% of the wines submitted are allowed to win prizes. These can be found on the following pages.
For a second competition, and to accompany our dossier on white wine, we present you with the prize-winning wines of the “Concours des Grands Vins Blancs du monde” in Strasbourg, France. This competition is na- turally held under the auspices of the OIV. Over two days, 70 judges tasted white wines from 18 countries and awarded the coveted medals. The wines were divided into the grape varieties pinot blanc, silvaner, gewürztra- miner and, new this year, grape varieties from all over the world.
