S.T.E.A.M.-ING IN 2019
By Zohreh Khosknamak, Youth Committee Member
It’s been an exciting adventure for WAL’s Science Club. There’s been
a lot of activity going on since the new year began. We are STEAM-
ing (STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and
Math in case you didn’t know) through 2019. Keep an eye out for fu-
ture Science Club meetings so your younger ones and you can join us!
Build it, and they will come! February’s Science Club meeting fea-
tured the classic creative STEAM equipment—Legos! A Lego Tower
Challenge was held where the goal was to make the tallest and most
steady structure. Club members worked feverishly in groups and tried
different design approaches in order to win the competition. They
came up with some amazingly imaginative and creative engineering
designs!
March’s meeting was all about bringing out the inner Monet, Picasso,
or Warhol. Forty kids gathered in the Card Room to bring the Art to
STEAM with the City of Alexandria’s Recreation, Parks & Cultural
Activities Department. On this day, volunteers took a low-tech, still
hands-on approach to teach Science Club members how 1-D, 2-D, and
3-D art differs spatially. Attendees then used this knowledge to make
3-D abstract portraits!
They children did a fantastic job using their imagination to make Club attendees and parent volunteers work together to
STEAM creations! It was another great learning experience hosted explore STEAM concepts.
