College Bound Physics (HS) - This course is designed to provide students with the skills
needed to successfully compete in a college level science environment. The course will begin
with the laws of motion and simple machines. We will continue to explore the areas of optics,
gravity, light, and sound, waveforms, electricity and solar power. Course prerequisites:
successful completion of Algebra I- students should have a strong understanding of Algebra I or
they need to enroll in the Advanced Math Lab. The Language of Science course is strongly
recommended to help students work through the process of writing lab reports. Prerequisite:
Chemistry Required Text: Conceptual Physics 3rd edition by Paul Hewitt Instructor: Becky Thai
College Bound Chemistry (MS by Approval & HS) - Covers a comprehensive variety of topics
for high school chemistry such as a lab safety certification requirement, atomic history and
modeling, stoichiometry, acids and bases, reaction types, Lewis structures and VESPR modeling
plus many more things in a fun and engaging experience. Our course is unique among home
school chemistry courses because we use a much more hands on approach with many different
models, interactive activities, and real chemicals not accessible to most home school families.
Students will leave the course with a collection of lab reports that demonstrate they completed
the classic labs that colleges are looking for upon admission. Students leave the course with a
working knowledge of what they were taught. They demonstrate this with a hands-on midterm
and final exam. Many students falter when they get to college because they were never required
to use the knowledge they gained. We minimize that difficulty by requiring hands on home work
and hands on testing. DUE TO THE POSSIBLE HAZARDS, THIS COURSE IS NOT
RECOMMENDED FOR STUDENTS WITH ADD OR ADHD WITHOUT PARENTAL
INVOLVEMENT. Prerequisite: Completion of a pre-algebra course with at least a B or higher. No
exceptions will be made. Required Text: World of Chemistry by Zumdahl 2nd edition Instructor:
Becky Thai
Marine Biology (MS & HS) - **May Be Offered 2019-2020** In this course we will be exploring
the creatures of the ocean, learning about their habitats, their physical and behavioral
characteristics, and the marine environment in which they live. Some topics that may be covered
are exploring the oceans, marine biologists at work, unicellular and multicellular organisms,
algae and plants and marine animals. Required Textbook: pending Instructor: Pending
Medical Careers (MS & HS) – This course is designed to help students exploring medicine as a
vocation learn about all the different options they will have as medical professionals. The
course opens with a unit on medical history and the rest of the year brings in live presentations
from individuals actively working in the medical field in various professions including veterinary
science. There is little homework expected from this course. Most learning will be done in
hands on way. Instructor: Pending plus various speakers.
