Physical Science (8 -9 ) - **May Be Offered 2019-2020** This course is designed to be the last
th
th
science course the student takes before high school chemistry. Thus, we generally recommend it
as an 8th grade course. However, your student can also use it for their 9th grade course work.
The text discusses such topics as the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, weather, the structure of the
earth, environmentalism, the physics of motion, Newton’s Laws, gravity, and astrophysics. The
author especially concentrates on the myths generated by the hysterical environmentalist
movement. There are many hands-on experiments to do, and they all use household chemicals
and supplies. Required Text: Apologia Physical Science 2nd edition Instructor: Leigh Elkins
Recommended Donation of $15 per weekly session
Intro to Research & Design (7 -12 ) - This course targets middle and high school students who
th
th
are not confident in their research skills and helps them to establish a research program that will
be successful and fun in order to participate in the science fair. Required Text: Secondary Science
Fair Manual Instructor: Lisa Giordano
Planetary Science (MS) - **May be offered 2019-2020** Students will gain an overall awareness of
the Earth’s structure, components, and how the different elements that make up our planet are
interrelated with those found in the universe. Required Textbook: pending Instructor: Pending
Honors Planetary Science and Astronomy - (Advanced MS & Early HS) Students will gain an
overall awareness of the Earth’s structure, components, and how the different elements that
make up our planet are interrelated with those found in the universe. Required Textbook:
Planetary Science- The Geology by Dr. John Morris, Planetary Science - Earth Science;
Geology, the Environment & the Universe, Planetary Science - In the Beginning by Walt Brown
Instructor: Dr. Becky Thai
High School Engineering (HS) - We are surrounded everyday by the products and systems
designed by engineers, and all our lives are enriched by the work of engineers. Throughout the
Teach Engineering collection, engineering is used as a vehicle to integrate math and science
fundamentals through open-ended, hands-on discovery that poses questions to students—why
does this work and how it is relevant to your lives? As technological literacy is enhanced,
students begin to understand the role engineers play in everything we see around us, inspiring
them to explore a world of possibilities. Minimal homework. No required textbook Instructor:

Honors Medical Biology (9 & 10 by approval, 11 & 12 ) - Advanced biology is offered as
th
a year- long elective science course to enrich what is being offered by parents to meet the typical
high school biology requirement. This is an honors course and is open by invitation only. There
will be an emphasis on anatomy and physiology as well as identifying micro biologicals through
serial testing and experimentation. Treatments of disease and medicinal chemistry is a
significant component of the course. Students participating in this course will have the option of
forming a study group to help with memorization. Laboratory experiences will be similar to those
offered in a medical based biology course offered at a community college. There will be a heavy
emphasis on apologetics and living systems. If interested, please contact Dr. Thai. Course
Prerequisite: successful completion of High School Chemistry with no less than 80%. There are
no exceptions to this requirement. Please sign up for general chemistry if you have not yet met
that requirement. Quest will not permit any student to take any high school biology course here
before completing chemistry. Required Textbook: Anatomy, Physiology & Disease for health
professions by Booth & Stoia Instructor: Becky Thai
