neck of the woods | art The Sanctity of Ashes
THE SANCTITY OF
ASHES
This piece came out of the
recent fires of Notre Dame
in Paris and the devastating
fires we experienced in Southern
Oregon the summer of 2020. The
design carved into this figure is the
North Rose Window from the inside
(on the chest) and the window from
the outside (on her back) of Notre
Dame. The windows represent win-
dows to the soul, what is left when
all has fallen to ash. The bird in her
hand represents what is possible in
freedom from attachments. The bird
behind her back serves as a reminder
that we often avoid our inner truth,
and look to “things” to fill our lives,
rather than allowing our true nature
to emerge. It is possible that what we
are holding on to may be holding us
back.
Inger’s is a story about drive, beauty,
grace, and resilience, showcasing the
creation of meaningful art that will
that speak of these trying times for
generations to come.
