“THE LAST FRONTIER OF THE FADING WEST”
Author: Helen Picca
A work of historical fiction, The Last Frontier of the Fading West, is filled with
history and events beginning with the sinking of a merchant ship off the coast
of Port Orford during WWII and spanning 50 years in the life of the heroine.
Mentioned in the book are Governor Tom McCall, the Beach Bill, various
sites on the coast attacked during WWII, the sinking of the Larry Doheny, the
Brookings bombing, Gearheart Mountain explosion, Battle Rock, the Port
Orford Heads, the myth of the Port Orford Meteorite and the Prehistoric
Gardens. The towns mentioned are Port Orford, Langlois, Bandon, Gold Beach
and Brookings.
Helen Picca is a local author, living in Port Orford, a former marketing execu-
tive from NYC, who has learned to love the isolation of living on this country’s
rugged western edge. She came for a visit and was inspired by the town’s people
and lush history to write this story of love and redemption. Set in Port Orford,
it captures living in a small, seaside community, where life is hard, but filled
with numerous rewards. Historical fiction, beginning in 1942 and spanning
50 years in the life of the heroine—through WWII to Vietnam to Kuwait—it
recounts her great love for a man, family and a town she chooses to call home.
Rich with history of the town, the state and the country, the book intertwines
events and locales along this southern coastline into a skillfully woven narrative.
A WWII novel, love story and history book all in one!
