MLK Day of Service
Did you have a day on or a day off on January 15,
2018? The Montgomery (AL) Alumnae Chapter of
Delta Sigma Theta, Sorority Inc., observed its First
Annual MLK Day of Service by involving chapter
members and the community in helping those in need.
This event was announced in the chapter’s newsletter
- MAC Memos, via Facebook and through three me-
dia presentations.
The first presentation aired on January 4, 2018, on
nd
WCOV a FOX affiliated station by Crystal Crump, 2
Vice President and Jessyca M Darrington, Community
Outreach Committee Co-chair. On January 11, 2018,
the second presentation was aired with Cathey Hen-
dricks, Community Outreach Committee Chair and
Jessyca M, Darrington, Co-chair. They restated the
significance of our chapter forming a partnership with
the Mid-Alabama Coalition for the Homeless
(MACH) and being committed to serve our communi-
ty during their interview on WSFA Alabama Live a
NBC affiliated station. During both interviews items
needed, the date of the event, time and location were
provided. The third media presentation prior to the
event was provided by Cassandra E. Brown, President
of the Montgomery (AL) Alumnae Chapter. She ex-
tended a personal invitation on behalf of the chapter to
all citizens to use their day off as a day on and give
gently used clothing and needed hygiene products to
their neighbors in need. This interview aired on the
morning of the event on Monday, January 15, 2018 at
the Fortitude Building.
Even though the MLK Day of Service Event officially
started at 9:00 a.m. some viewers watched the 5:30
a.m. media presentation and began delivering items as
early as 8:00 a.m. In true Delta Style light refresh-
ments, a video presentation highlighting the Commu-
nity Outreach Committee’s previous events, along
with the audio of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s - I
Have a Dream Speech were playing in the background
to greet all that entered.
