Colonial Era
In the Colonial Era the Dutch and British Imperial Authorities respectively,
ensured that the Dutch and British Nationals were predominant actors in
Politics and in the Economy of the Country.
In time, particularly after the British take over in 1806 and the freeing of slaves
in 1834, the Dutch, Germans, and French Settlers coalesced to form a new
block,
the Afrikaner Volk.
The former Slaves, surviving remnants of the Khoi Khoi Nation and a
sprinkling of San/Zan who were not killed or exiled in the Genocide also came
together to forge an identity that is encapsulated in the term Coloured People.
Colonialism also led to other reconfigurations within the indigenous sector
including emergence and or consolidation of powerful language groupings eg
• Xhosa
• Zulu
• Sotho
• Tswana
• Ndebele
• Pedi
• Swazi
• Venda
• Tsonga
