“Muste would no doubt risk getting beat to a pulp for one last peace statement,” thought Jake. “Niebuhr would call it an unnecessary, self-righteous display motivated by sinful levels of ego.”
“One of Niebuhr’s favorite supplications, the Serenity Prayer, is the answer,” thought Jake. “God give me the serenity to accept what cannot be changed, the courage to change what can be changed, and the wisdom to know the difference.” He felt a little better.

When Cathy left the OSR meeting she resolutely sped away, careful not to stop long at the treacherous intersections of no man’s land. As soon as she hit the freeway, her crusading spirit began to fade. Jake’s warnings loomed as large as the raw mountainside cut making way for the highway. But she didn’t have the time for such heebie jeebies. The back of her mind switched to figuring a way to keep the bank from evicting one of her client families from their little home.
“At least this war hysteria will soon disappear and I can concentrate exclusively on the violence of poverty,” thought Cathy. “Violence can only decrease,” she faithfully mused.
