violent. By then America had fought in three more Middle Eastern wars, as well as the epic Hemispheric War. Domestic violence had spiked and the media was finding ever more horrendous ways to shock their audience. For instance, one night Cathy and a friend were chaperoning a teenage slumber party. Gunshots came from the bedroom and Cathy went to see what the girls were watching. As she passed through the doorway, a man ran toward her with a shotgun. She jumped back as he fired just to the right of her. Half expecting to die, she jerked her head to see who got hit. Another man fell towards her, his chest blown open, blood and entrails covering the carpet.
“Holy Christ!” shouted Cathy. She noticed the girls hardly moved on the bed.
Cathy got grim and steeled herself for disaster, but before she could, both men disappeared without a trace and a ten-foot hammerhead shark accelerated towards her. It veered and attacked a floating woman who held an underwater camera, tearing her leg off. Blood floated to the floor and bounced, creating a strange combination of liquid and solid. The woman’s face contorted and she let out a silent underwater scream.
For a brief moment Cathy was completely terrified. Then she realized that she had been duped by Spectrom projections. She remembered that it was hip for teenagers to show Spectrom versions of live death scenes. They were an adaptation of the popular 1990s film series Faces of Death.
The girls sat still, eyes round and wide. Cathy pulled the plug and the sinking woman disappeared. The carpet returned to a clean soft-cream color. Cathy grabbed the
