Required Education Sessions for Residents (not rotation-specific)
1. Department Grand Rounds (Weekly Tuesday 7:15-8:15am):
All residents attend except residents on night float and vacation. This series includes:
a. Traditional grand rounds with a focus on generalist-level learning objectives
b. Obstetric Patient Safety Conference: morbidity and mortality-type conference with
participation of ob/gyn, anesthesiology, neonatology, and ob nursing
c. Gynecology Patient Safety Conference: morbidity and mortality-type conference with
multi-disciplinary participation for selected cases
d. Senior (R4) residents’ grand rounds presentations: each R4 selects a topic and mentor.
Each resident presents 1 session during the summer
2. Resident Core Lecture (Weekly Thursday 7:15-9:15am):
All residents attend except residents on night float and vacation R1. This series includes:
a. Sessions on important content topics that complement clinical learning and rotation-
specific conferences
b. Level-specific education sessions for junior and senior residents (started 2019-2020)
c. Resident Journal Club
d. Balint Group Sessions: sessions discuss challenging resident-patient interactions. These
are designed to help develop communication and professionalism competencies.
e. CREOG In-Training Exam review sessions: sessions that go over key items to know for
the annual exam in January.
f. Content topics that benefit from a longer time-slot.
g. Annual resident as teacher workshop
h. Class meetings to prepare for the responsibilities of the upcoming academic year
3. Intern Education Series (Monthly Friday 8am-1pm):
All R1’s attend except residents on vacation. This series includes:
a. 30% hands-on practice using simulation models. Skills training includes ob laceration,
laparotomy incision opening/closing, microscopy, endometrial procedures,
hysteroscopy, R1-level counseling with standardized patients, amniocentesis, operative
vaginal delivery, and laparoscopy
b. 40% interactive lecture/workshop sessions on “need-to know” topics for R1’s.
c. 20% “support group” lunch—R1’s discuss important topics together.
4. Magee Annual Alumni Day Conference (Annually in October):
This half-day event includes talks that update ob/gyn’s on new advances in the field. Many
residency alumni return to Magee for this event.
5. Magee Annual Trainee Research Day Conference (Annually in May/June):
This all-day event includes research presentations (both oral and poster) from residents and
clinical fellows in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences. Two
keynote speakers present cutting edge investigation and insight into career development.
