CULTIVATING MORAL CHARACTER | Chapter 6
enough. For example, a person like this may say, ‘There’s not enough to go around’ (deficient world) or ‘I’ll get this while I can’ (deficient circumstances). This belief system results in fear of lack and drives people to do whatever it takes to obtain more than is needed, even if it means being unethical. Be assured of this – these actions affect the people around us, and not in a good way.
However, when we unpack the thinking behind the fear of lack and challenge the things we’ve been taught that have caused us to doubt, we will see that the fear is nothing more than a myth. This revelation gives us the motivation to develop moral qualities in our character, such as honesty and integrity.
Another common, fear-driven myth is that ‘more of anything is better than what we have’. This myth quickens the pace of life and is the force behind greed. Yet, in the end, none of the ‘more’ acquired makes life any more valuable than it already is. ‘More is better’ thinking moves us further away from the values that truly matter and leads us on a journey with no finishing line and no winners – how can it when there are no markers to indicate when we have enough? Rather, this thinking just continues to add to stress to our lives and keeps us in financial bondage.
