In the pharmaceutical field, there are many different types of professional reading materials that
pharmacists need to deal with such as textbooks, clinical trials, professional journals, evidence-
based medicine guidelines, etc. Different types of professional reading materials would have their
own unique components and characteristics. Hence the reading would be as a different purpose
and different way of reading and interpreting in each type of reading material, for clearly stated,
the mindset of reading will be changed when reading different types of reading materials. In this
class 3 Essentials in Professional Reading Comprehension, will provide the information about some
common materials that will be used in professional practice and will guide how to read them
effectively.
Challenges of Technical Texts
Characteristics of technical text compose of firstly, a great wealth of ideas in a small space
where we have plenty of thoughts with limited lines. Secondly, new concepts and ideas would
interest the readers more than ordinary concepts and ideas. Tertiary, technical terms to express
the thought much better. Fourthly, complex formulas often refer to a well-structured level of
comprehension that illustrates sophistication, flow while being able to grasp the readers’

Clinical trial protocol is very specific material that describes the methodology of
the trial and researchers have to follow Good Clinical Practice (GCP) to perform their tasks
properly.

Some examples of professional journals are Journal of Pharmacy Practice, Journal
of Social Pharmacy, British Medical Journal (BMJ), and Journal of International Conference

to match their audiences and editors.
