COLLEGE Admission for Athletes
Campus Visits for Athletes
The Guidance and College Counseling Department works closely with coaches to support students who plan to play sports at the collegiate level. This process varies depending on the sport and level of the athlete, as well as the interest level of the college. Efforts are made to bring the coach into the Kick-Off College Conference and to keep in communication with the coach during the recruitment process. As this process proceeds throughout the senior year, the counselor supports the student, helps him or her complete the required applications and follows through on requests for information from colleges. It typically is an individualized process for each athlete. Please ask your counselor for further information as the need arises.
Keep these questions in mind:
• When you visit a college, imagine yourself at the campus not as an athlete but as a student. Would you want to stay if you weren’t playing your sport?
• Would you be admitted to this college without your talent in the sport you will play? If not, what will the challenge be for you to stay in good academic standing?
• Is there preferential scheduling for athletes? You will need your classes during the day since evenings will be used for practice, travel, games, etc.
• Are there certain majors that are so demanding or tightly scheduled that playing a sport will be a constant conflict?
• Will you be given academic support? How much? When? Are special arrangements possible?
• Will there be a person to advocate for you with the professors regarding absence, making up work and exams?
• Are there separate dorms for athletes?
• Do athletes have their own weight room?
• What are the medical arrangements in case of injury? What is the access to trainers?
• As an athlete in your particular sport, will you be able to go home for breaksn or between semesters?
• Will you be expected to stay for summer? Will you be able to hold a summer job?
On the following pages you will find a sample coach’s letter, NCAA Eligibility Center eligibility requirements for Division I and Division II, and additional documents and worksheets for student- athletes.
