“Doctor, we only have 20 minutes to do the operation and we are all exhausted! There has to be another way!” “I am afraid there is not... now get ready to operate!”
“... very well doctor,”
As Usalina tried her hardest to keep the young boy’s vitals stable Bianca and the Doctor started their operation.
This operation required speed and precision and one mistake could mean the end for the patient. However, Bianca knew how to do this operation quickly, and well and was confident in her skills. She started helping the doctor following the exact procedures and movements her mother had taught her for the operation. However soon Bianca noticed something. She was starting to blackout. All of the fatigue from working without taking a break had finally caught up to her. She tried to push through as much as she could. She fought back the urge to sleep and operated at the same time. Though she had tried her hardest to stay continuous her body and mind gave up and she collapsed in the middle of the operation.
“Bianca... Hey Bianca can you hear me... Do you know what day it is? ...I’m sorry doctor she is out cold what should we do-”
Bianca woke up to soft light. She felt heavy and her head was aching terribly. She was in one of the rooms in the clinic that they used for patients who needed to sleep. She did not remember much but she could remember being in the middle of an operation and the next thing she knew she heard Usalina talking to her and she was out. Then Bianca finally processed what had happened. She rushed out of the room into the entrance of the clinic to find the doctor and Usalina standing there while the boy’s family was crying on the floor.
“Did he make it!” she said a little louder than usual but with the same emotionless voice. The doctor nodded his head from one side to the other slowly not wanting to upset the family even more. Bianca had collapsed in the middle of the operation and they were not able to finish it in time. The mutation had exploded the boy’s heart and killed him. They were able to remove the mutation after, but the boy was not so lucky.
“You need to take better care of yourself,” said the doctor “if you don’t then you won’t be able to help other people. You can’t help someone if you are unconscious!”
“I will make sure this ne-”
“Go home, Bianca,”
“I’m sorry?”
“Go home and get some rest. I have already informed your school about what has happened, and they are letting
you take a few days off,” the doctor sighed “I am not angry at you, but I do need you to take better care of yourself ok! Come back in a few days when you are feeling better.”
Bianca went home that day and went to bed straight after she got home. She lay on her bed unable to sleep. She was disappointed in herself. She knew that if she had tried harder, she could have saved that boy. She thought back on that painting and realized what she had done. She almost started crying but she managed to hold back her tears. She had never let a patient die before. All of her hard work had always paid off and produced good results but now she was finally realizing what it meant to be a nurse and a member of the 3 Exouvius Royal Bloodlines. She decided to rest for a while and stay home reading some books in her leisure time. The books she read were not encyclopedias or notes but simple stories to help her relax. For one week she stayed in her house and rested to regain her strength.
After a week passed Bianca came back to the clinic to find her paperwork almost completed. She was shocked! Sitting at her desk she wondered how the others could have done her paperwork with such busy schedules.
“Welcome back Bianca! We missed you!” said Usalina, giving Bianca a surprise hug. “Did you do my paperwork for me Usa?” asked Bianca.
“Actually, it was the Doctor who did it,”
“What?”
“Yea, he closed the clinic while you were out so we could focus on our paperwork and even did yours,” “What about his work?”
“He seemed really focused and finished it very quickly,”
“Is that so?”
“Oh, and by the way, the Doctor made a new schedule so that we each have two days off on a certain day of the week to relax and finish paperwork,”
“But won’t that leave the clinic understaffed?”
“Actually, he said he wanted to hire a new nurse and they would be starting today,”
“Of all the days why the one I come back?”
“Who knows? The Doctor has always been unpredictable,”
Just as Usalina finished explaining the details of the new schedule to Bianca the Doctor walked in followed by
someone Bianca did not recognize.
“Glad to see you back, Bia. How are you?”
