After her death, Peronist strategy became more radical, taking over the army by promoting political favorites and indoctrinating cadets with Peronist teachings. In 1954, he took on the Church. Divorce was legalized, parochial schools were brought under government control, cathedrals were burned, and the entire cabinet excommunicated. In 1955, military conspirators gave Peron a choice, resign or face civil war. He voluntarily went into exile in Paraguay.16
