placed in a unique position, regarding the boycott debate. The 1936 Olympic Games gave black Americans the opportunity to fight against racial stereotypes within the United States and abroad. But there were major concerns regarding the treatment of black Olympians in Nazi Germany. Although the 1936 Olympic victories restored American pride in black communities and became a major step towards alleviating the discrimination black athletes faced in American sports, the athletes returned to America, where they were treated as second-class citizens. The Olympic success of these black American athletes was mostly ignored, and the athletes were unable to obtain professional recognition. The 1936 Olympic Games brought to light the racial discrimination that black American Olympians faced.10
