Gulliver boasted seven nominees for the 2020 Miami Herald Silver Knight Awards, one of the nation’s most highly regarded student awards programs. Each of the candidates are seniors who have excelled in and out of the classroom, all while generously serving their community:
Art: Ashley Ubalijoro ‘20

For the fourth straight year, Gulliver Prep students won the Congressional App Challenge (District FL-27). Jake Charron ‘21, Joshua Delgado ‘21,
Kamal Kay-Ramos ‘21, and Jordan Schmidt ‘21 created the winning app, AED Locator, which uses a person’s geolocation to find the nearest automated external defibrillator in more than 10,000 locations in Miami-Dade County.
Olivia Connor ‘20 gave an open lecture titled “Storytelling for Justice:
ld’s Mind Towards Enduring Change” to undergraduate
students at the University of Notre Dame. Over the last two years, she has authored a series of children’s books on equity, inclusion, diversity, and justice, and was invited to Notre Dame after a video of her talking about her books caught the eye of a university professor.
Lauren Bartel ’22 was invited by the Miami-Dade County Commission to share her views before the Board of County Commissioners, as a next- generation subject expert on life sciences, conservation, ecology, and ecosystem resiliency. In doing so, she represented all 500,000 students across public and independent schools in Miami-Dade County. Lauren testified as part of the County’s public hearing to review its long-term policies and funding for Everglades and Biscayne Bay ecosystems, as well as on managing development encroachment, addressing water quality, and defending against sea-level rise.
A trio of Upper School students were invited to present their project, Spondooli, at computer science fairs hosted by Yale and Harvard University. Ryan Gibeau ‘22, Bradley Karmin ‘21, and Matias Ortiz ‘21 created Spondooli to give people an easier way to learn the stock market. The tool simulates the truest, most realistic stock market experience for its users, in the simplest way possible.
