P. 2
Abstract
Producing a video to communicate a new model of coaching to GAA Coaches: A
narrative approach.
This research aims to investigate the process of creating and using a video resource to
communicate a new coaching model to coaches within the Gaelic Athletic Association
(GAA).
10
The model, known as the ‘Coach Model’, has been devised by the GAA to provide a
conceptual framework to support coaches’ understanding of effective coaching and
through which they can reflect on their own coaching practice.
With over 20,000 teams registered with the GAA annually to participate in Hurling and
Gaelic Football competitions, and given the significance of the quality of coaching to
both the continuing participation as well as the performance of players, the
10
communication of the ‘Coach Model’ is of societal relevance to the GAA community.
Using the Educational Entrepreneurial Approach to Action Research the current paper
investigates the production of a video that communicates the model through the
experiences and expertise of renowned GAA Coach and Coach Educator Paudie Butler;
the subject of the video. The video intends to communicate the model through Butler’s
story, a narrative around effective coaching that coaches can relate to, and through
which they can make sense of their own understanding of effective coaching and their
own coaching practice. The video creates a social partnership between Butler and the
viewer by implementing the principles of digital storytelling and instructional design in
video production.
Supporting the production process I use semi-structured interviews and an anonymous
survey to gather feedback from my collaborators and a sample of coaches the video is
intended for, while personal journals document the evolution of my own thinking as I
strive to produce a video that is a reflection of my passion and my developing practice.
The video will be published on the GAA Learning (www.learning.gaa.ie) Community
Portal and be utilised as an integral part of the delivery of the GAA Coach Education
Programme.
Use of the video may provide the basis for further research into its success in
communicating an understanding of effective coaching to GAA Coaches and
subsequently into its impact on the experiences of players of Gaelic games.
