A chain is only as strong
as its weakest link, and
this link is pitifully
small. This chain and
lap link rig served as a
rappel anchor at the top
of one of Joshua Tree’s
most popular rock
formations for over a
decade, until I replaced
it in the mid-1980s. I
never trusted my life
to that one little link,
but I witnessed many
people who did, and
it probably held over
a thousand rappels. I
always backed it up
with a sling.
