I. 靠 (kào) to depend on / to rely on / by means of :

If 靠 is the main verb of the sentence, it means “ to depend

on, to rely on” :

● 他今天能录取优秀的大学，全是靠自己的努力和坚
持。

● 一个人在外面生活，才能真正体会到「在家靠父母，

出外靠朋友」的重要。

If 靠 is the first verb of a sentence with two verbs, it means

“ by means of ”, in this case, 靠 is more like a
preposition:

● 这次考试我们是靠老师整理一些题目的重点，我们才

能轻松地得到高分。

● 书豪会说多种语言，听说他都是靠听音乐、看电影学

语言的。
