action on July 20, 1864, and died the following January at age 37. He is buried in Parma cemetery. We know
from her father’s medical account book that Sarah moved away from Parma later that same year.
Sarah's obituary provides a brief (if somewhat inaccurate) summary of her life:
Mrs. Sarah A. Lewis died, Monday, September
9, 1912, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H.
S. Frost, of Lansing. The deceased was born in
Shoran, VT (wrong location of birth and
spelled incorrectly), February 3, 1835, and was
united in marriage at the age of 18 years
(actually 19) to George A. (actually M.) Lewis,
Sarah A. Lewis Tombstone
who died about 40 years ago. Mrs. Lewis was

a sister of Dr. R. S. Armstrong and for a
number of years was a resident of Chelsea.
She is survived by two daughters. The funeral
was held from the home of her daughter in
Lansing, Tuesday, and remains were taken to
George M. Lewis Tombstone Chapel Cemetery near Parma, for burial. Dr.

Cora E. Lewis Tombstone
Dancer of this place attended the funeral.

Although not mentioned in her obituary, it appears that she remarried as her widow’s pension in December
1867 shows her as Sarah A. Greenman. It appears that after she left Parma In 1865 she moved to Galesburg, IL
where both of her sisters lived at the time. Apparently while there she met and married William Greenman
whom she appears with in the 1870 Census. There is some difficulty in reading the enumerators writing as her
daughter’s names appears to be Carrie and Emma, while her oldest daughter’s name should, of course, have
been Cora. In April of 1871 her last name was still shown as Greenman, but she was back in Michigan; this time
living in the county of Van Buren in Michigan. By 1880 she was using her first husband’s surname again and had
transferred to Ann Arbor, MI. In the 1888 – 1889 Ann Arbor directory, Sarah, Cora and Emma Lewis are shown
as residing in Ypsilanti, MI, with both daughters are listed as school teachers. In February 1892 she was living in
the Village of Chelsea, Washtenaw Co. MI. Other than for the above period, there is never again a reference
made to her marriage to William Greenman or what may have happened to him or their relationship.
