Performance Evaluation Report on Rural Roads Constructed Using CRRI-Bitchem Cold Mix in Different District of Assam during 2008-2009
4.0 Scope of the study
The scope of the study comprises detailed field performance evaluation which are as mentioned below.
4.1 Field Work:
i) Collection of details of rural roads sections from the concerned department's field engineers, which
has already been completed 4-years of service.
ii) Selection of 4-years old rural roads constructed using Bitchem Cold mix and hot mix for laying Pre-
mix Carpeting under PMGSY and MPNA Schemes in different district of Assam.
iii) Visual observation of surface condition of cold and hot pre-mix bituminous carpeting in terms
distress, developed after 4-years of service and their drainage conditions.
iv) Observation of traffic movement on the road sections.
v) Collection of in-situ samples of Bitchem Cold Mix from few selected rural road sections.
4.2 M/s Bitchem Asphalt Technologies Limited, Guwahati, Assam the pioneer & producer of bitumen emulsion
in North-East region awarded a work order to Director NEIST, Jorhat vide their WO No. Bitchem/2012-2013/13
dtd. 28/02/2013 to take up the work for performance evaluation of rural roads constructed using Bitchem cold mix
under Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sadak Yajona (PMGSY), Govt. of India and Mukhya Mantir Paki Path Nirman
Achani (MPNA), Govt. of Assam for rural road development Schemes in different districts in Assam.
Accordingly, discussions were held on terms and conditions prior to undertaking the job with M/s Bitchem Asphalt
Technologies Limited, Guwahati, Assam to finalize the plan and programmed to carry out the field work.
The actual field work for performance evaluation of specified PMGSY and MPNA rural roads could be started on
th
15 May 2013 from Jorhat district with the officials from CSIR-North East Institute of Science & Technology,
Jorhat, Assam, M/s Bitchem Asphalt Technologies Limited, Guwahati, Assam and Public Works Department
(Rural Road Division) of respective division.
The field activities were carried out after selection of the sites with the help of officials & staff who was deputed
and involved during the construction of the site and have well knowledge of the sites.
This report is based on the visual observations, sample collection during the field work and feedback provided by
the PWD officials.
The cooperation and help during the period of investigation/ project work of the concerned engineers and
officials of PWD are also gratefully acknowledged.
