Performance Evaluation Report on Rural Roads Constructed Using CRRI-Bitchem Cold Mix in Different District of Assam during 2008-2009

8.0 Discussion and Conclusions

·From this study it is seen that Bitchem Cold pre-mix carpeting is performing well in various rural roads
constructed under PMGSY and MPNA Schemes in different district in Assam. This new cold mix
technology is advantageous and sustainable in highly rainfall, flood affected and remote areas like
Assam as well as other North East region of similar climatic conditions.

·The rural road from P.G.J.H. to Chapari Gaon Road in Majuli, Jorhat and from P.G.J.H. to Ratanpur
Miri Gaon Road in Majuli, Jorhat shown in the Photographs Sl. No. 11 & 12, constructed using
Bitchem Cold pre-mix carpeting is performing well after submergence in water for 4-months during
2012 severe flood in Majuli, Jorhat. It can thus be concluded that Bitchem Cold pre-mix carpeting can
be used in flood affected areas in Assam.

·During field performance evaluation, the surface condition of the Bitchem Cold pre-mix carpeting
and their performance of some of the selected rural roads were found excellent and the other found
good surface condition. From this study it can be concluded that if properly construct and maintained,
the Bitchem Cold pre-mix carpeting will last minimum 5 to 6 years after construction.

·During field performance evaluation, the surface condition of selected rural roads constructed using
hot pre-mix carpeting during 2008-09 were also studied. From this study it can be concluded that
Bitchem Cold pre-mix carpeting found better performance than the hot pre-mix carpeting in rural
roads.

·The Bitchem Cold pre-mix carpeting samples collected during the field performance evaluation was
seen that the bonding between Cold pre-mix carpeting with the aggregate of Water Bound Macadam
(WBM) base found excellent after 4-years of service.

·The road surface roughness was found excellent and good riding quality in some selected rural roads
which were constructed Bitchem Cold pre-mix carpeting manually.
