RESCUER


        Requirements:

        Do questions 1-7 and one each in the groups 8-9, 10-11, 12-13

        1. Hold the Scout Swimmer Badge (stage 3)
        2. Understand and where possible demonstrate the following methods of rescue
        throw, wage, row.
        3. Enter the water, swim 50 metres to the subject and tow for 50 metres using a
        towing aid e.g. lifebuoy, piece of wood etc. land the subject by any suitable method.

        4. Enter shallow water with a straddle (running) jump, swim 20 metres to a subject
        considered to be unconscious and not breathing.  Using the chin, tow to water
        shallow enough to stand in.
        5. Demonstrate mouth to mouth resuscitation, then secure the victim to a position
        of safety.
        6. Jump or dive in the water, surface and swim 10 metres.  Recover an object 2.5 –
        4.5 kilometres from a depth at least 1.5 metres.  Bring to the starting point using life
        saving back-stroke.

        7. Throw an 18 metres lifeline to fall between two pegs twice out of three throws 2
        metres apart.
        8. Show method of rescue in the case of house fire, gas poisoning, car accident,
        contact with live electric wire.
        9. Using a training Manikin where possible demonstrate the expired air (mouth to
        mouth and mouth to nose) method of respiratory resuscitation.

        10. Show method of rescue from a high building or tall trees.

        11. Draw up a plan to indicate measures for rescue operations in the case of heavy
        flooding caused by excessive rains or river flooding.

        12. Indicate the perils of night rescue operations and the measures which should
        be taken to meet these circumstances.

        13. What basic human requirements should form part of a Rescue Operational
        Centre for an Emergency.
