MAP READER
Requirements:
1. Understand the principal signs and symbols used on a 1:50,000 scale Ordnance
Survey map of your locality. Be able to pin-point your home and Scout
Headquarters. Explain how well known local features of your choice are
represented on the map.
2. Make a scale model of an 80 metre (250 ft) hill –showing the contour layers at
regular intervals.
3. Describe what you would see along a 5 kilometre (3 miles) stretch of road set by
the examiner on any 1:50,000 Ordnance Survey map.
4. Show you can use 6 figure grid references.
5. Know how to use a compass and set a map.
NATURALIST
Requirements:
1. Study over a six-month period the plant, insect and animal life of any piece of
natural land, roadside, or hedge, an area of one acre in extent or the water hedges,
an area of one acre in extent or the water life of any lake, swamp or water course
of similar size. Keep simple records, field notes, sketches and drawings which you
must discuss with the examiner.
2. Discuss with the examiner how the natural fauna and flora could be affected by
man's activities.
3. Make a detailed study of the life history, one each of any form of animal, plant,
water creature found in our country.
4. Make a compilation of any laws or restrictions intended to safeguard the
vegetable and animal life of our country. Discuss them with examiner.
