388            Each modelled striding with a curled up trunk,
154 | BONHAMS  wearing a large blue enamelled saddle blanket
               with geometric floral designs, a boy seated
               before a rectangular howdah, enamelled with
               alternating pink and blue panels on a coral
               red ground, the interior turquoise and rim gilt,
               the bodies of the elephants enamelled in pale
               apricot, finely overpainted to simulate the
               folds of skin.

               A FAMILLE ROSE ‘ABSTINENCE’ PLAQUE
               19th century
               The face with a cartouche enclosing the
               phrase 齋戒 zhaijie, or ‘abstain’, surrounded
               with a lotus meander on a lime-green ground,
               the reverse with the same phrase in Manchu
               script, the edges decorated with fine scrolling.

               Qianlong seal mark
               The bowl with four roundels to the exterior
               enclosing European figures, with gilt floral
               decoration in between, the interior with
               waves, cliffs and bats; together with a small
               famille rose bowl, Yongzheng six-character
               mark.
