BAO XING [AKA: BO HING]
Canton
circa 1860-1910
* Simplified Chinese form of
the Bao Xing mark
* The Bao Xing maker’s mark [far left above] could possibly
be another branch of Bao Xing that might be unrelated or
simply a late version of the mark. Further research is being
made to verify
Bao Xing silver items tend to be of high quality and worked
with traditional decorative motifs and conveys a message
that it probably specialised in small bespoke items for both
the export and China market, intricate boxes a speciality.
The Bao Xing style was quite a definitive one, almost
always high-relief repoussé work of highly intricate and
complex decorative motifs based on either traditional
figural scenes or repeat motifs based with arabesques.
Such works set Bao Xing very much apart from
contemporary silversmiths of the time, especially in
Canton.
