The two frames were made by the artisan silversmith who used the mark ‘ZHUO’. We
know this silversmith worked in Shanghai. We can also see that one of the frames was
originally stamped with the Luen Wo mark which was later erased and the Cum Wo mark
added.
What remains unexplained is why a Shanghai artisan was making silver for a Hong Kong
retailer; intriguing, but not the end of the world. What is worrying, though, is the fact these
frames were sold in a major auction house and described as “a pair”. That is clearly not
the case.
