YUNG HWA [aka YING HWA]
Weihaiwei [Port Edward]
circa 1915-1930
It is not known whether this silversmith was a retail or manufacturing silversmith; the mark is fairly rare and is
inconsistent in its spelling. Since it never appears in conjunction with a Chinese mark, it is reasonable to
assume this could be an artisan silversmith.
Wehaiwei was a leased territory of the United Kingdom between 1890 and 1930 and with Port Arthur
[Lüshunkou] dominated the seaward approaches to Beijing. It became the summer home base of the Royal
Navy’s China Station.
This menu holder is decorated with the
crown of the emblem of the Royal Navy
and was obviously a commissioned item
[one of many] that was used as part of the
official officers’ mess silver.
Other items of Yung Hwa silver are often
items of cutlery with emblem terminals.
