            It is not known whether this silversmith was a retail or manufacturing silversmith; the mark is fairly rare and is
            inconsistent  in  its  spelling.  Since  it  never  appears  in  conjunction  with  a  Chinese  mark,  it  is  reasonable  to
            assume  this could be an artisan silversmith.

            Wehaiwei  was  a  leased  territory  of  the  United  Kingdom  between  1890  and  1930  and  with  Port  Arthur
            [Lüshunkou]  dominated  the  seaward  approaches  to  Beijing.  It  became  the  summer  home  base  of  the  Royal
            Navy’s China Station.


                                                                       This  menu  holder  is  decorated  with  the
                                                                       crown  of  the  emblem  of  the  Royal  Navy
                                                                       and  was  obviously  a  commissioned  item
                                                                       [one of many] that was used as part of the
                                                                       official officers’ mess silver.

                                                                       Other  items  of  Yung  Hwa  silver  are  often
                                                                       items of cutlery with emblem terminals.
