Ming Dynasty to Late Qing Dynasty
The first cast seated in padmasana, the
hands folded on the lap in dhyanamudra,
wearing long robes and with a serene, gently
smiling face, seated on a double-lotus throne,
hardwood box; the second cast wearing
thickly-folded robes, the standing figure
holding his hands in namaskara mudra over a
small pedestal. The figure of Ananda: 12.8cm
(5in) high (3).

Ananda was one of Buddha’s first cousins,
and of all the disciples, had the most retentive
memory. Most of the sutras in the first part of
the Pali Canon and most of the suttas in the
Sutta Pitaka are attributed to his recollection
of Buddha’s teachings during the First
Buddhist Council.

The equine cast semi-recumbent with the
two forelegs slightly raised and the head
tilted to the right, the tail tied into a knot, and
the genitals delineated underneath. 11cm (4
