AN IVORY VOTIVE PLAQUE OF AVALOKITESVARA
Ming Dynasty
The Buddhist deity with serene face crowned with a five-point tiara,
with four arms, two holding attributes, the others in mudra, seated in
padmasana atop a lotus throne, all surrounded with a mandorla, the
base inscribed with a crossed double vajra; with a later fitted hard
wood shrine. The plaque: 6.5cm (2 1/2in) high (2).

A LARGE IVORY SEAL
18th/19th century
The finial carved in the round with a kneeling footman holding an
oversized cash, with a caparisoned elephant standing four-square
behind the figure, the seal face with a four-character intaglio seal 臣寶
琛印, chen bao chen yin, Treasure Seal of Chen.

Large ivory seals are rare and the present lot is unusual in the quality
and sculptural complexity of the finial, see a similarly proportioned
seal with a mythical beast knop in the Avery Brundage Collection, San
Francisco Art Museum no. B72M55.
Also, compare the modelling of the kneeling figure with an ivory set of
eight footmen holding Buddhist Emblems, 1800-1900, San Francisco
Art Museum Collection no. 1992.90.1.
