A CARVED WHITE JADE ‘TAOTIE’ VASE AND
COVER
The elongated compressed body is carved in shallow relief with a
band of taotie masks below a frieze of ruyi-heads and above a band
of pendent blades. The neck is flanked by a pair of elephant-head
handles with loose rings. The cover is surmounted by a pierced
finial in the form of a coiled scaly dragon. The stone is of a
mottled milky white tone with concentrated areas of pale russet.
