A RARE PAINTED ENAMEL FAMILLE ROSE
‘MILLEFLEURS’ THREE-PIECE ALTAR SET
19th century
Comprising an incense burner, fang ding, of
rectangular shape, raised on four sharp blade-
shaped legs, with domed cover; and a pair of
candlesticks, rising from square, pedestal bases,
with large drip pans and smaller pans supported by
hu-shaped stems, all painted in brilliant enamels of
magenta, yellow, green and lavender and white with
bouquets of peonies, magnolias, chrysanthemums,
lotus flowers and wisteria.
The fang ding and cover: 25cm (9 7/8in) long; each
candlestick: 38cm (15in) high. (4).

The millefleurs pattern first seen in the Yongzheng
period, flourished during the Qianlong period
and continued onto the 19th century. For a small
enamelled bowl, Qianlong mark and of the period,
with the interior decorated with millefleurs pattern,
see Compendium of the Collections in the Palace
Museum: Enamels 5, Painted enamels of the
Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), Beijing, 2011, p.242,
pl. 186. The pattern also occurs on the roller of a
painted enamel facial massager, mid-Qing dynasty,
