Hayashi Shihei (1793-1793), attr.
102 x 54 cm. Black and white print. Image of a Dutch VOC
ship named Schllaak under full sail and with cannons ready to
fire. The crew is depicted working in the various masts of the
ship, the captain is on deck, smoking a pipe, and in the
company of a slave, and another man stands on the stern
with a telescope of sorts. Above the image a full description
(Orandasen zusetsu) of the ship, dated 1790 in Western
transcription. Good impression, mounted as a scroll painting.
Hayashi Shihei visited the Dutch factory in Dejima in 1777,
where the VOC ships Roodenrijs and Zeeduin had arrived. It
is likely he visited one of those ships. During his second visit
in 1782, no ships arrived, on account of the Anglo-Dutch war.
However, Shihei produced a print of the ship Schellag after his
1782 visit. The print presented in this lot is a copy of the 1782
print. Although very similar in composition, it is different in
details of the ship. Also the explanatory text differs from the
1782 print. Another, hand coloured, copy of this, the 1790
print is in the Kyoto University Main Library, where Hayashi
Shihei is identified as the maker.
