The present lot probably shows a scene from the 水滸傳 shuihu
zhuan or The Water Margin (also known as Outlaws of the Marsh), 286
a 14th century vernacular novel by Shi Nai’an. We see Li Kui, the
ferocious warrior nicknamed Black Whirlwind, approaching a broken A PAIR OF VERTE IMARI PLATES

Each painted and gilt with butterflies amongst sprays of
chrysanthemums issuing from swirling water, the cavetto with floral
panels on a geometric pattern ground.
