               A DARK GREEN JADE ADZE
               SHANG DYNASTY, C. 1600-1046 BC
               The heavy adze is carved with a slightly domed surface on both
               sides with a beveled cutting edge on one end opposite to a short
               rectangular hafting bar above a hole pierced from both sides. The
               stone has a pine green tone with lighter green and white veining.

               PROVENANCE
               Acquired in Hong Kong in 1992
               Compare to a celadon and russet jade adze with flattened rather than
               domed surfaces excavated from the tomb of the Shang queen Fu Hao
               at Yinxu, Anyang, Henan province, illustrated in The Jades from Yinxu,
               Beijing, 1981, no. 26 (919).
