A HUANGHUALI TREE TRUNK-FORM BRUSH POT

The brush pot is carved from one section of
huanghuali in the form of a tree trunk, with dramatic
knots and burls.

PROVENANCE:

Property from the Lai Family Collection.

A zitan brush pot of larger size (26 cm. high), also carved
as a gnarled tree trunk, was sold at Christie’s New York,
18 September 2014, lot 1070. Compare, also, a nanmu
example in the Collection of Robert Hatfeld Ellsworth,
sold at Christie’s New York, 18 March, 2015, lot 127,
where it is dated to the 18th century.
