ceeded in manufacturing tea utensils that differ
scarcely at all from their originals.
The Ti-hsing-yao is not important from the point
of view of a Western collector. As will be gathered
from what is written above, it was manufactured for
use, not for ornament. Considered as examples of
skilful manipulation of clays, curious natural colour-
ing, and admirable delicacy of modelling, some
specimens deserve a high place in the most select
collection. But the pottery possesses few decorative
qualities and belongs chiefly to the class of fictile
curiosities.
