undressing her whilst simultaneously making
love, the courtesan smoking a long kiseru

series Furyu Enshoku Mane’emon (Elegant
Erotic Mane’emon): the first, no.14, depicting
a courtesan and her client arguing beneath
a futon (quilt), her apprentice apologizing by
kneeling and bowing, prostrating herself in
front of the sliding door, the miniature man
Mane’emon bemusedly watching the drama
unfold at the foot of the futon, unsigned,
21cm x 27.5cm (8¼in x 10 13/16in);
the second, no.19, depicting a scene of
a courtesan emerging behind the screen,
catching her client and apprentice enjoying an
intimate moment, Mane’emon crawling out of
the legs of the lacquer sake table, unsigned,
21cm x 29cm (8¼in x 11 7/16in). (2).
