order to create minimal waste. In its carving style and decorative elements, it embodies the archaism much favored by early Qing
rulers, especially the Qianlong Emperor.
Jade sculptures of this subject are rare; compare a larger related group sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 24th February 1976, lot 52;
and a pebble-shaped carving depicting a similar mythical beast clutching a large lingzhi sprig in its mouth, from the Edward T.
Chow Collection, sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 8th October 2009, lot 1678.
Pleasing to hold in the hand for its weightiness, this piece may have been inspired by earlier Ming dynasty mythical beast-form
paperweights made for the scholar's desk. For example, see a finely carved jade in the form of a recumbent beast with much of the
material retained in its natural form, sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 8th October 2006, lot 1150; and another sold at Christie's New
York, 19th September 2007, lot 64.

另一例售於紐約佳士得2007年9月19日,編號64。
