A DUAL-OVERLAY GLASS ‘EIGHT HORSES OF MUWANG’
SNUFF BOTTLE
1820-1880
The milky-white bottle of compressed globular profile, with a
cylindrical neck, flat lip, slightly tapered and carefully finished oval
foot ring, skillfully carved through the dual overlay of ochre and black
with the eight horses sensitively rendered in various poses either
on a grassland or supported by overhanging rocky platforms, and
separated by two gnarled pine trees at the narrow sides.

Of tapering ovoid form, set on a flat oval foot, with a cylindrical neck,
neatly finished flat lip, with striking dark brown dappling and striation
sandwiched between two layers of variegated, transparent golden
brown glass resembling tortoiseshell.
